What is Pass Plus
Pass Plus is a recognised short driving course aimed at new drivers. It is designed by the Driving Standards Agency (DSA), with the help of insurers and the driving instruction industry.
Pass plus is for newly qualified drivers, and must be taken in the first year after passing the practical driving test.
Pass Plus will build upon your existing skills and knowledge, it will teach you how to anticipate, plan for and deal with all kinds of hazards, and can help you become more confident on the roads.
Many insurance companies participate in the Pass Plus scheme and you could reduce the cost of your car insurance. For a list of participating insurance companies please see the official Pass Plus website.
There is no test at the end of the course, you will be evaluated by your driving instructor, who will then contact the DSA and a certificate will be issued.
Pass Plus is made up of six practical modules (minimum 6 hours) which include:
Driving in town - can be daunting to the newly qualified driver, especially in rush hour. With part time traffic signals, complicated junctions and an increase in traffic/pedestrians, new skills need to be learnt to deal with these effectively.
Driving on rural roads - country roads offer the freedom from high volume traffic, but can hide all manor of hazards from farm vehicles, animals and walkers. All of which require a good level of concentration.
Driving in all weathers - the great British weather can throw a variety of different conditions at the new driver, sometimes all at the same time. Pass plus will equip the new driver with the skills to drive safely in all weather conditions.
Driving at night - night time driving brings with it a range of different hazards that are unique to night time. Dealing with dazzle, use of lights and judging distance are amongst the skills new driver will learn, on a pass plus course.
Driving on dual carriageways - multi lane driving requires a number of skills, observation, anticipation and negotiation amongst many. Pass plus will enable you to develop these skills to a competent safe level.
Driving on motorways - At no time whilst you are learning to drive will you have any experience of driving on a motorway. Pass plus will enable you to negotiate and learn the required skills, to safely drive on Britain’s motorways.
