Young Drivers

Firstly, if you’re a young driver one of the best things you can do to get ahead in driving is to apply for a provisional driving licence three months before your reach the age of 17. If you're claiming mobility allowance, then you can apply at the age of 16. The form you need is Form D1 – pick one up from the post office, or you can request the form online at the DVLA website.

Eyesight for driving

Its well worth getting your eyesight tested before learning to drive. Reading of a car number plate from a minimum distance is essential if you want to pass your driving test. So if you normally wear contact lenses or glasses you must make sure you wear them when driving and when taking your driving test.

The current requirement for eyesight when driving is the ability to read an old style car number plate in daylight from a minimum distance of 20.5 meters. New style car number plates which were introduced in back in September 2001 you should be able to read from a distance of 20 meters.

Other ways to help you learn to drive

There are different parts to you driving test such as the hazard perception and online theory test so practise these as much as possible. The Highway Code is essential reading for any driver or learner.
